Luminus Iridius, also known as the Night Wish Moths, were once cherished by the people of Lunaria, who believed that those who sought them out would be granted wishes of happiness, luck, and even love. People once left offerings of fruit, soft fabric, and shiny gems or stones. As the Night Wish Moth species flourished, so did the Black Maple Forests they resided in. Black Maple trees were some of the very few tree species that were naturally enchanted. The source of all magic in Lunaria came from these forests, whose trees created homes to many rare creatures and plants. However, one day the folklore changed. Suddenly, many began believing the moths were actually lower demons in disguise, making deals instead of wishes and binding naïve mortal souls to evil contracts. Some folks claimed that they had even seen the moths swarming and eating those who did not keep their end of the deal. Such rumors caused widespread panic, and many began killing the moths on sight. Burning down their nests, destroying their eggs, and uprooting entire colonies. It wasn’t long before the moth species was thought to be extinct, with all traces of them being destroyed. Soon enough, many began to think of them as a myth.As time passed, the once flourishing enchanted forests began dying, and the wildlife that lived within its thick woods became endangered. With their biggest pollinator gone, the trees began to lose their magic, plants stopped growing in abundance, and the population of several creatures became dangerously low from lack of food. Those gifted in magic use in Lunaria saw a great decrease in their power, leaving many scholars rushing to find a cure for what they believed to be the beginning of an epidemic.Iris is the new guardian spirit and protector of the Night Wish Moths, and must work to rebuild her colony in order to save not only the Black Maple forests, but all magic in Lunaria. Iris has found herself with many new powers, but one spell in particular has the potential to fix most of her problems. The only issue is…well…she needs mortal souls. Not the entire soul, but with a small piece, offered willingly, she can create new life. For you see, this spell turns offered soul fragments into Night Wish eggs. Over time, the egg will hatch and someday become an adult moth, joining the colony and aiding Iris in her plans. Now, why should mortals willingly offer a piece of their souls? Well, in Iris’s words: “These moths are…probably some of the dumbest creatures I’ve ever seen. I truly don’t know how the remaining moths lived this long. But, they are also…the happiest creatures I’ve ever seen? I don’t know if they’re just so empty-headed that they can’t comprehend other emotions, but they’re always full of joy. From what I’ve observed in your world, you humans are constantly chasing some small release of serotonin, some small joy. So….as long as the soul fragment isn’t destroyed, you will always feel the bliss and happiness your mothling counterpart feels. That is my offer, and that is your price.
